How I scored 905/1000 in aws Cloud Practitioner ~without whitepapers

Intro

If you are not a good reader like me and like videos for your studies I have good news for you. You can still score good without reading much. I did read some whitepapers and quickly realized it wasn’t going anywhere. My attention span for reading is very small and I wish to overcome this soon. Because you will not have videos on every topic and not very detailed as written documents. Especially the new technologies that come. You have to build the habit of reading documentations. Reading and implementing might keep you interested to keep moving if you are like me instead of just reading and reading all day.

So now coming to the point, Let me tell you what I did. I’m working in a startup company who is in a process of becoming a partner for amazon web services (AWS). And you need certain number of certified engineers in order to qualify. So I and my colleagues were asked to get the certificates. We studied about 3 months and it wasn’t all reading as well. We started a sample project along the way. That helped us understand some of the technologies pretty well. Things that we worked on were easy for us. However aws has hundreds of services. Every sample exam had a service that is totally unknown to us. I didn’t find any clear cut defined boundaries of services that you need to know about. Every service seemed to have a potential to be one of the honorable mentions in a question lol.

The meat of the matter

I basically watched a lot of videos, They used to have a learning path with bunch of training videos. While we were studying they launched a new course that basically covers everything and sufficient to get you started. This is the link of that course (AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials) . However I don’t think this course alone will get you good grades. I found aCloudGuru‘s course were very good as they give you hands on experience and you understand the materials better. I watched that course at 1.5x speed in the last 3 days of my exam that really helped refresh my memory and learn new things. I have to give a big credit to Udamy AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner questions answer course . Their 6 sets of questions were pretty tough. And honestly the exam was a lot easier. I finished the exam within about 50 minutes with about 40 minutes to spare. I was worried about any exam time problems such as electricity outage or internet connection drop etc. Alhamdulillah non of that happened. I didn’t even review the answers back as I was so worried about the technical problems.

Exam Day Story

Okay so before the exam day I realized that pearsonvue exam service do not allow exam from Linux operating system (maybe they didn’t build software for that). I use Ubuntu and the windows that I have has problem of getting WiFi disconnected for no reason. You will need to test your system (microphone, camera, internet speed) few days earlier to avoid problems in the exam day. I thought I’m going to do it a day earlier and then I realized that it doesn’t support Linux. So I had to borrow my cousin’s laptop and I was all set for the exam. Next day my exam was at 9:15 am local time and the check in was 30 minutes earlier. I checked in. I had to take pictures of my room. Test my system, provide a picture of my national ID. And then I was set for my exam and the camera turned on and they said I cannot move from my seat even though the exam didn’t start yet. There was a proctor watching me live and he could chat with me as well. Eventually when the exam started I rushed thought the questions as it felt easy and I was worried about any sort of interruptions that may appear. When the exam finished they gave me a short survey and I filled that up. And instantly after that I got my results as PASSED I was very happy! I stood up from my seat to grab my phone that was out of my reach during the exam so I could take a picture that I passed. But the proctor instantly messaged my that I’m not allowed to leave my seat. I replied that I already finished my exam and already passed. He asked my to click on exit. So I did that instantly and didn’t take any picture. And later I was worried what if they disqualify me. Thankfully that didn’t happen later that day I got my certificate and badge from youracclaim . And I think on the third day they sent me my score report.

My Certificate

Competency report

One of my colleague’s exam didn’t start!

One of my colleague’s exam didn’t start at all on pearsonvue. He checked in he’s exam was about 2 hours before us. He checked in and stayed there for about 2 hours basically all exam time. He’s exam didn’t start, proctor didn’t show up. He was devastated. Later when he contacted them they said he didn’t show up. But that wasn’t the case he explained the situation and thankfully pearsonvue was kind enough to refund the money and he sat and passed the exam about a week later. So if you face any technical problem don’t hesitate to contact them and get your $100 back so you could sit again.

A job post in upwork that is worst than slavery

Guys I just come across this job post, it’s absolutely insane. He is looking for someone / a team to do a job that is simple enough but tedious to the level that is absolutely unacceptable. He posted a video tutorial where he explained the task by basically going through it. It took him about 2.5 minutes. Which translates to 250,000 Minutes which means 4166.67 hours. And he has posted his budget as only $80. Upwork has a fee of 20% so that means the freelancer will get $64 dollars. That translate to about $0.015/hour!!! This is absolutely crazy man!!!

If one person works about 12 hours a day he/she will basically have to work throughout the year to earn that 64 bucks.

And what is more bizarre that some poor souls are applying for this without doing the math! and some with even lower rates.

I hope upwork brings in policies to control these types of irresponsible job posts.

How to stop all promotional sms from Grameen Phone (GP) Free

I was getting sms everyday from grameen phone for the offers I don’t remember using them. So I needed to stop it somehow. There might be more ways to that but probably the easiest and cost free is by chatting with them on their website https://www.grameenphone.com/

Simply click on the chat icon on the right bottom corner of the website and ask them to stop the all annoying promotional sms. They will do it for you instantly and activate DND (Do not Disturb). As simple as that!

Kaggle changed Kernels to Notebooks

I’m new to Kaggle.com , If you don’t know Kaggle it’s a home for data scientists and engineers to to learn, compete and win huge amount of money making sense / predictions of data. People code with python and R. So when you enter into a competition you can see other people’s code in kernels. So I was looking for it but couldn’t find it, I thought they probably disabled it. No more looking into other people’s code 🙁 . Later I realized it was renamed to Notebooks. Which is probably a better name for it. But kernel sounds better to me.

Fixes WordPress

wordpress “This site is experiencing technical Difficulties”

The Problem

I shifted to new host recently and I didn’t realize a lot of my pages were down and showing this error message. Then gradually I found out that the problem is with my bank category and pages that are under bank category. This are “custom post” considering wordpress term. They were called item in my wordpress theme that I’m using. It’s directory theme from Ait-Themes.

The Fix

The fix was simple, after several correspondence with my new host they said the fixed the problem by increasing MEMORY_LIMIT to 256MB for the websites to work. Just in case you don’t know where MEMORY_LIMIT is it’s in php.ini . But that is not the only place where you can change and they didn’t change from there. Rather they changed it in wp-includes/default-constants.php . I still don’t know why! and how is it different.

Excel Formula for CGPA Letter grade to points

I wrote this formula for excel to figure out the grade points when I insert certain letter grade .

Since I study in North South University, I’m following their grading policy.

Numerical ScoresLetter GradeGrade Points (Per Credit)
93 and aboveA Excellent4.0
90 – 92A-3.7
87 – 89B+3.3
83 – 86B Good3.0
80 – 82B-2.7
77 – 79C+2.3
73 – 76C Average2.0
70 – 72C-1.7
67 – 69D+1.3
60 – 66D Poor1.0
Below 60F* Failure0.0
 I** Incomplete0.0
 W** Withdrawal0.0
 R** Retaken0.0

Assuming the following is 3 credit course. I have to put formula in the green bordered cell D7 below.  When I put the letter ‘B’ for example it will multiply 3 (grade point) with 3(credit hours) which resulted in 9.  If it was A, the result would have been 3*4=12.

=IF(C7=”A”,4B7,IF(C7=”A-“,3.7B7,IF(C7=”B+”,3.3B7, IF(C7=”B”,3B7, IF(C7=”B-“,2.7B7, IF(C7=”C+”,2.3B7, IF(C7=”C”,2B7, IF(C7=”C-“,1.7B7, IF(C7=”D+”,1.3B7, IF(C7=”D”,1B7,0))))))))))

These are just nested if statements. You just need to be careful of those parentheses.

Code Python Tricks

Adding item to a list with slice in python

If you have been coding for a while in python you already know you can add an item in a list using

list.append(value)

where list here is a variable that contains list of variables, append is a function and as parameter you will input the value you want to add at the end of the list.

However, you can’t add a value by stating an index number that has not been defined already.

But you can use slice to add that with trick. Look at the screen shot, it’s pretty self explanatory!

Learning Python (Automate the boring Stuff) Chapter 3 problem’s alternative solution

Number Guessing Game in python!

I was learning python from this wonderful video tutorial and I usually try the problem before the tutor gives the solution. I found out that my solution is better and more full proof than theirs. It’s probably because they are still teaching the concepts and not worried about the details. I thought I could share what I wrote. Let me know if you have better solution and if you find any bug in mine.

You can also learn this from the website

http://automatetheboringstuff.com/chapter3/

#This is guess the number game
import random

print('Hello, What is  your name?')
name = input()
print('well ' + str(name) + ', I am thinking of a number between 1 and 20.')

myGuess = random.randint(1, 20) #between and including 1 & 20

for guessesTaken in range(1, 7):
    print('Take a guess')
    guess = input()
    try:
        if guessesTaken < 6:
            if int(guess)> myGuess:
                print('Your number is too High')
            elif int(guess)< myGuess:
                print('Your number is too low')
            elif int(guess)== myGuess:
                print('You got that right in '+ str(guessesTaken) + ' attemp(s)')
                break
        else:
             print('okay you tried ' + str(guessesTaken) + ' times you failed, it was ' + str(myGuess))

    except ValueError:
        print(' You didn\'t enter a number')
